Neurology

Introduction: Neurology

Your nervous system – your brain, spinal cord, and nerves – controls everything you do, think, and feel. When something isn’t right, whether it’s debilitating headaches, seizures, or numbness in your hands, it can seriously impact your daily life.

Our Neurology specialists at One Tree Health are here to help you regain control and improve your quality of life. We provide compassionate, expert care for neurological conditions in a patient-focused environment.

From the first appointment, you’ll find that we listen carefully to you – your symptoms, your concerns, and how your condition affects your day-to-day activities. Neurological issues can be complex, but we strive to explain everything clearly and involve you in developing a personalized treatment plan.

Our neurologists work closely with our other specialists (pain management, neurosurgery, orthopedics) to ensure you get a comprehensive approach. If your condition can be managed medically, we will do so with the latest therapies and lifestyle guidance. If you need a procedure or surgery (like for a severe carpal tunnel or a refractory epilepsy case), we coordinate with our surgeons to streamline your care.

Our goal is to help you get back to living fully, with your symptoms well-controlled.

Conditions We Treat

Our Neurology clinic handles a broad range of conditions affecting the nervous system, including:

Headache & Migraine

We treat chronic headaches, including migraines, tension, and cluster headaches. For migraine sufferers, we offer comprehensive care—from identifying triggers to advanced treatments like Botox or CGRP inhibitors. Our goal is to reduce the frequency and severity of your headaches so you can live more freely.

Neuropathy & Nerve Disorders

If you have numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in your hands or feet, it may be peripheral neuropathy from diabetes or other causes. We diagnose nerve issues like carpal tunnel, ulnar, or peroneal neuropathy using tools like nerve conduction studies to pinpoint the problem and guide treatment.

Back and Neck Pain

Not all spine issues need surgery. Our neurologists can evaluate conditions like sciatica, radiculopathy, or mild spinal stenosis and manage them conservatively – using medications, guided exercises, perhaps nerve block referrals, and monitoring. We focus on improving nerve function and pain without jumping straight to surgery.

Seizure Disorders & Epilepsy

If you’ve had seizures or have epilepsy, we provide thorough evaluation and personalized management. This includes EEG testing, identifying seizure types, and adjusting medications. We also guide you on safety and lifestyle changes. For hard-to-control cases, we coordinate advanced care like epilepsy surgery or nerve stimulation devices with our neurosurgery team.

Stroke & TIA follow-up

If you’ve had a stroke or TIA, we provide long-term care to prevent future events. We manage medications, monitor risk factors, and coordinate rehab for any lasting effects. And remember—time is brain—so seek immediate care for any warning signs.

Movement Disorders

We help patients with conditions like Parkinson’s
disease, essential tremor, or restless legs syndrome. From medications that
improve tremors and stiffness to guidance on exercise and possibly deep brain
stimulation referrals when needed, we aim to maximize your mobility and quality
of life.

Multiple Sclerosis and Demyelinating Diseases

Our team can diagnose
MS through clinical exam and MRI findings and provide ongoing management
with disease-modifying therapies. We also assist with symptomatic relief for
issues like spasticity or fatigue. Regular monitoring and support can help you
navigate life with MS effectively.

Traumatic Brain Injury & Concussion

We diagnose and manage concussions and post-concussion syndrome, addressing symptoms like headaches, memory issues, and mood changes. We guide safe return to work or sports and offer advanced TBI screening, including a specialized blood test that detects brain injury markers. Early diagnosis is key to preventing long-term effects.

Balance & Vestibular Disorders

If you have dizziness, vertigo, or balance issues, we work to find the cause—whether it’s neurological, vestibular, or sensory-related. We perform balance and vestibular testing, then tailor treatment with rehab exercises, medication, or ENT referral if needed. Preventing falls and improving your stability is our priority.

Cognitive Disorders

For concerns about memory loss or cognitive decline
(possible dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc.), we perform cognitive evaluations and
appropriate testing. Early diagnosis of dementia can help in planning and starting
treatments that may slow progression. We also provide guidance to families on
management strategies and resources.

Sleep Neurology

While we don’t operate a full sleep lab, we do initial screening
for sleep-related neurological issues like narcolepsy or REM behavior disorder,
and we coordinate sleep studies for conditions like sleep apnea (often done in
conjunction with pulmonary or sleep specialists).

If you’re experiencing neurological symptoms—like chronic numbness, weakness, balance issues, memory problems, or episodes of confusion—our neurologists are here to help identify the cause and guide you through treatment. Your nervous system’s health is vital, and we’re committed to providing expert, compassionate care.

Neurology Services & Tests

Our Neurology clinic offers both in-depth consultation and a variety of diagnostic tests and treatments, such as:

OneTreeHealth

Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

This electrodiagnostic test evaluates the health of your muscles and nerves. By placing small electrodes on the skin and using a fine needle in certain muscles, we can measure how well electrical signals travel along your nerves and how your muscles respond.

EMG/NCS is commonly used if you have numbness, tingling, or weakness—to help distinguish between conditions like peripheral neuropathy, radiculopathy (a pinched nerve in the spine), or muscle diseases. It also helps pinpoint nerve compressions like carpal tunnel syndrome and assess their severity.

The test may be slightly uncomfortable (due to small electrical pulses and needle insertion), but it’s generally well tolerated and provides valuable diagnostic information.

OneTreeHealth

Electroencephalogram

An EEG records your brain’s electrical activity using small electrodes on your scalp. It’s a painless test often used to evaluate seizures or episodes of unconsciousness. We offer outpatient EEGs, and in some cases, prolonged or sleep-deprived versions to detect subtle abnormalities. The results help guide seizure diagnosis and treatment.

OneTreeHealth

Headache Evaluation and Treatment

For headache and migraine relief, we offer more than just medications. Treatments like occipital nerve blocks and Botox injections can help with chronic symptoms. We also provide guidance on lifestyle changes, trigger management, and a personalized action plan with rescue options for severe attacks.

OneTreeHealth

Lumbar Puncture
(Spinal Tap)

If needed for diagnosis—such as suspected meningitis or multiple sclerosis—our neurologists can perform a lumbar puncture in-office. Using local anesthesia, we collect cerebrospinal fluid safely and with care. The procedure is well tolerated, and while headache is the most common side effect, we take steps to minimize it.

OneTreeHealth

Balance and Vestibular Testing

We perform clinical balance assessments and, when needed, coordinate specialized vestibular testing like videonystagmography. In the clinic, we use simple tests like the Dix-Hallpike maneuver to diagnose BPPV and can treat it with the Epley maneuver. For complex cases, we partner with specialists for advanced evaluation.

OneTreeHealth

Cognitive Screening

We perform cognitive screening in the clinic when there are memory or thinking concerns. For more detailed evaluation, we may refer you for neuropsychological testing to help differentiate types of dementia or better understand cognitive issues.

OneTreeHealth

TBI Screening and Advanced Diagnostics

We offer an advanced blood test for concussion (TBI) that detects key brain injury biomarkers like GFAP and UCH-L1—helping determine if further imaging (like a CT scan) is needed within the first 24 hours. It’s a breakthrough in fast, accurate concussion care. We also perform full neurological and cognitive exams, and coordinate imaging when needed.

OneTreeHealth

Regenerative Medicine (PRP Therapy):

In some cases, we use Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections to promote healing in tendons, ligaments, or joints. PRP is made from your own blood, concentrated with healing platelets, and injected into the injured area to stimulate tissue repair. It can help with chronic tendon injuries or arthritis for patients seeking a more natural treatment option.

Every procedure is performed with the utmost care for your comfort. We explain the process beforehand so you know what to expect. Most treatments are done with local anesthesia, and mild sedation can be used if needed. Your comfort and questions are always our priority throughout your care.

What to Expect During a Neurology Visit?

During your first neurology visit, expect a lot of questions! We’ll take a thorough history of your symptoms, medical background, medications, and how the issue is affecting your life. Neurologists are like detectives—small details can provide big clues. We encourage you to describe your symptoms in your own words, and if you’ve kept a symptom diary (like for headaches), bring it along.

We’ll also perform a detailed neurological exam. This includes checking your cranial nerves (vision, facial movement, hearing, etc.), muscle strength, reflexes, sensation, coordination, and walking. Don’t worry if some tests seem odd—like following a finger with your eyes or using a tuning fork on your feet—they help us determine which part of your nervous system may be involved. The exam is non-invasive and generally painless.

Based on the initial evaluation, we may order further tests such as blood work, imaging (like an MRI), or electrodiagnostic tests (EMG/EEG). We’ll always explain the reason for each test. In many cases, if the issue is straightforward, we can make a diagnosis and start treatment the same day.

Follow-up visits

We’ll focus on how you’re responding to treatment or further investigate the results of any tests. Neurological conditions sometimes require medication adjustments for the best results, and we’ll work with you to fine-tune your treatment plan. Follow-up visits are also a chance to address any new concerns or symptoms.

Neurology care can be ongoing—for chronic conditions like epilepsy or multiple sclerosis, we’ll be your long-term partners in monitoring and managing the disease. For acute or resolved issues, you may “graduate” from regular visits once things are stable, but you’re always welcome to return if needed.

We pride ourselves on being approachable and supportive. It’s completely normal to feel anxious about neurological symptoms, and we do our best to provide reassurance and clear, honest answers.

Education is a big part of our care—we’ll help you understand your condition and what can be done. We’re also realistic: some conditions, like certain neuropathies, can be managed but not cured. In those cases, we focus on strategies to improve your comfort, function, and quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Neurology

What is an EMG/NCS and why do I need it?
  • An EMG/Nerve Conduction Study is a test to evaluate the health of your
nerves and muscles. If you have symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness,
or muscle cramping, this test helps determine if a nerve is pinched or damaged,
and where. For example, it can confirm carpal tunnel syndrome, or detect a
pinched nerve in your neck or back causing arm/leg symptoms. During the test,
we stimulate nerves with small electrical pulses and record responses, and use a
fine needle to measure muscle electrical activity. It can be a bit uncomfortable,
but it’s very informative. We often perform EMG/NCS right in our office and
review results with you. It guides our next steps (like needing physical therapy,
surgery referral, etc.). Rest assured, we’ll make you as comfortable as possible
during the test and it typically is completed within about 30-60 minutes.

I have frequent migraines – can you really help? I feel like I’ve tried everything.
  • We know how frustrating migraines can be. Yes, we can help! Neurology has
seen many advances for migraine in recent years. First, we’d review what you’ve

tried and how, since sometimes optimizing dose or combination of preventive
meds can make a difference. We’ll also look at triggers and lifestyle factors.
Beyond standard medications, we can offer treatments like Botox injections
(approved for chronic migraine prevention) or newer CGRP monoclonal antibody
shots that have helped many migraine patients reduce their headache days. We
might also consider neuromodulation devices or referral for cognitive behavioral
therapy for pain coping. There’s a lot in our toolkit. Our goal will be to significantly
decrease the frequency and intensity of your migraines so you can regain your
life. Many patients who “tried everything” find relief with the newer options or a
    fresh comprehensive approach.

My doctor says I have a “pinched nerve” in my neck causing arm pain. Do I see neurology or neurosurgery?
  • That can depend on severity. Often, the first stop can be neurology for a
pinched nerve (also known as cervical radiculopathy). We can confirm the
diagnosis with an EMG and imaging if not already done, then manage it with
medications, physical therapy, maybe a referral for a pain management injection
(cervical epidural) if needed. If those measures don’t help and you have a
confirmed significant disc herniation or bone spur, then we would refer you to our
neurosurgeon for evaluation of whether surgery (like a discectomy or fusion) is
needed. We work as a team – if you start with neurology and it turns out surgery
is best, we will smoothly hand off your care to the surgeon (and vice versa,
surgeons send patients to us if surgery isn’t indicated yet). So either starting
point is okay; we’ll ensure you get the right treatment.
What is a TBI blood test and should I get one after a head injury?
  • The TBI blood test is a new diagnostic tool we offer for certain cases of head
injury or concussion. It measures two proteins that are released into the blood
after a brain injuryarmy.mil. It’s typically used within 24 hours of a head trauma to
help determine if there’s likely brain tissue injury that might require a CT scan or
more attentionarmy.mil. This test can be done quickly (results in ~15 minutes)
and can sometimes reduce the need for unnecessary CT scans (which involve
radiation). If you or someone had a concussion (say from a car accident or fall)
and there are symptoms like confusion or memory loss, this test can be an
additional piece of information alongside our clinical exam. It’s not mandatory,
but it’s helpful. We’d recommend it especially if we’re on the fence about imaging
or want to confirm a diagnosis. On our TBI Blood Testing page, you’ll find more
details. Ultimately, it’s one more way we ensure we’re giving you the most up-to-
    date care.
I’m worried I might have MS (multiple sclerosis) because of some strange symptoms. Can your clinic diagnose that?
  • Yes, absolutely. If you have concerns like numbness, vision changes,
weakness episodes, etc., we can do a comprehensive evaluation. Diagnosing
MS typically involves an MRI of the brain and possibly spinal cord to look for
characteristic lesions, blood tests to rule out MS mimics, and sometimes a
lumbar puncture for specific markers. Our neurologists are well-versed in this
process. If MS is diagnosed, we will discuss treatment options (there are many
effective disease-modifying therapies now) and connect you with resources.
Early detection and treatment of MS can make a significant difference, so it’s
good that you’re attentive to your symptoms. We’ll be with you at each step,
    providing clarity and support.
